Model Blocks

Model Blocks Program

Detroit Shoreway and the West 76th Street block club, in partnership with Councilman Matt Zone, the City of Cleveland, and Neighborhood Progress, Inc. are hard at work implementing Model Blocks, a transformative residential improvement program.  The target area for Model Blocks is from W.76th through W.73rd Streets; and from Detroit Avenue north to Goodwalt Avenue.  The program brings together many resources to help homeowners repair and beautify their homes.

Another objective of the  Model Blocks program is the elimination of vacant, abandones, or eyesore properties either through demolition or rehabilitation.  Properties that have been identified by the neighborhood block club are assessed to determine if they are good candidates for rehabilitation or if they are beyond repair and need to be demolished.  Recetly, 7404 Herman Avenue was donated to DSCDO by Flagstar bank.  This house had been vacant for many years and was evaluated for structural soundness and cost-effective rehabilitation.  Unfortunately, the home was beyond repair, and it was demolished in early April.

A more positive development is the purchase/rehabilitation of 7405 Herman Avenue.  The house had been vacant and boarded up for many years, but was sound enough to be salvages and renovated as a single-family home.  Construction began in April 2007 and is scheduled for completion this summer.  Once an eyesore, this house will now be a home for a new family moving into our neighborhood.

If you are a property owner or homeowner in the Model Blocks target area or in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood, and are interested in either renovating your home or donating or selling it to Detroit Shoreway, please contact our housing department at 216-961-4242.  We would be happy to meet with you to discuss low interest loans and assistance provided by Cleveland Action to Support Housing (CASH), the Neighborhood Housing Services Fix-Up Fund, or the Cleveland Restoration Society program.
